Counselling is a talking therapy. The aim is to support and provide you with an opportunity to explore personal issues in safety, focusing on your emotional needs and problems. Counselling provides a confidential, secure and safe place to talk about your concerns.
I am a Humanistic Integrative counsellor. This approach is flexible and adaptive focusing on the whole person, and therefore I use the therapeutic relationship between the client and counsellor to help you change for the better by exploring how your past and present thoughts, feelings, behaviour and environment may be affecting you in the here and now. I offer the opportunity to work creatively should you wish, this can make therapy effective for people who find it difficult to identify or verbalise their feelings. This way of working means that your needs, goals, and unique view of the world will be at the centre of our work together.
I sometimes find it valuable to include a CBT approach. This is a talking therapy that helps you manage problems by encouraging you to recognise how your thoughts can affect your feelings, behaviour and physiology. CBT combines a cognitive approach (examining your thoughts) with a behavioural approach (the actions you do). It aims to break overwhelming problems down into smaller parts, making them easier to manage.
Through talking you can find out about yourself which may help you understand what is happening for you. My role is to help you develop your own understanding. By being more aware you may change and feel more empowered to choose to do things differently.
This work is about being true to your self rather than being who you think you 'should' be. This can be both challenging and rewarding work leading to emotional healing and growth. It works best when we both commit to engaging in the process. We will attend to your whole person: how you/we make contact, talk, hear, listen, move, breathe and see.
I will explore with you what you feel, do, want, avoid, expect and dream, as well as your ways of coping which may have become unhelpful and keep you stuck. The emphasis is on how you relate to yourself and the world around you. Armed with this knowledge you can move to a healthier attitude towards yourself and the world.
